Charterhouse Music Group has been proud to represent John Flynn over the past sev en years.John Flynn has been called a philosopher with a guitar. His songs take the form of existential musings, stories and observations, filled with irony, humor and humanity. I also call him friend, teacher and inspiration, and I have many fond memories of the things we experienced and learned while working together. John and I have recently both examined our furture goals and plans, and have decided to end our partnership and carry on individually. He is a true gentleman, and I will continue to hold his craft in the highest regard.
On his most recent album, To The Point, John works on a broad emotional canvas and delivers on what the Philadelphia Inquirer calls "his earnest effort to probe and present the truth". From the sublime to the ridiculous, To The Point captures the strength of the Philadelphia based artist's writing and the magic of his live performance.
Recorded during John's sold-out two night stand at The Point in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the new album offers 14 new songs whose cast of characters runs the gamut from a jealous exotic dancer, Ruby Con, who exacts permanent vengeance on her philandering husband, to a father desperate to pay for his young sons medical treatments in "Hard Box of Time". The album gives melody to the anguished words of Edgar Allen Poe in "Annabel Lee", credit to Cupid for the absurdity of infatuation in "Fat Naked Angels", and insight into John's own spiritual traditions in "The Price".
All six of John's albums combine his love of folk and country music with his ability to touch both adults and children. His lyrics have always been his hallmark, and on To The Point they are rendered with such uncommon craft and heart that Kris Kristofferson recently compared Flynn to songwriting greats Roger Miller, Shel Silverstein and John Prine. |

The wordplay that John incorporates into songs like "Get Your Dog Off My Leg" and "Susie, Queen of E-mail" is exactly why the Songwriters Monthly suggests that "to find anyone with word skills comparable to Flynn, you would do better looking in the literary community than in songwriting circles. Simply put, John Flynn is a master of imagery, rhyme and emotion".
As a Nashville staff writer, John Flynn had a Billboard Top 40 hit
with Billy Swan's cover of "Rainbows and Butterflies", and as a contemporary Americana artist, John's music has charted nationally
in Gavin's Top 15. More recently, Flynn's weary cowboy lullaby "Old Paint" was recorded by Chris LeDoux, and his imaginative rock-a-billy version of "I Want You To Want Me" has been included on the Cheap Trick tribute record.
Although he has received numerous songwriting awards, John is
most proud of his Blue & Gold Achievement Award from the American Library Association. This was presented to John for his notable contribution in the field of family music. John's work with children began with two family albums; Love Takes A Whole Box of Crayons and A Manatee Sneezed On Me. His music and appearances have become a powerful and favorite contribution to WXPN's Peabody award-winning Kid's Corner program.
As a result, John also devotes considerable time to his school assembly and songwriting workshops in elementary and high schools. These programs allow him to combine his love for the craft of writing with his innate ability to connect with audiences of all ages. From these sessions spring songs like "My Brother Ricky's For Sale" and
"A Manatee Sneezed On Me" that showcase his ALA award winning style.
John has shared the stage with everyone from Shawn Colvin to Los Lobos, Trout Fishing in America to Chris Smither. He has traveled from Santa Cruz to Boston to present his music to enthusiastic audiences. In the Philadelphia area, John can be found everywhere from intimate clubs like the Tin Angel and The Point, to the Keswick Theatre, and from festivals like Philadelphia Folk and Spring Gulch, to Veterans Stadium. In fact, the Vet is the setting for the closing song on To The Point, the unlisted studio recording of "I WILL NOT FEAR [9/17/01]". This song was inspired by the emotional response of 40,000 people to John's rendition of "God Bless America" during the seventh inning stretch of a baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves the week that major league baseball resumed play following the terrorist attacks on our nation. "I WILL NOT FEAR [9/17/01]" is a tribute to the American spirit.
